The Cult of the Comment Section: Mattress Wars and TikTok Tantrums
When a President’s Day Sale Facebook Post Sparked a 395-Comment Pile-On
If you are on TikTok, you may be aware of a creator named Kylie Perkins, who surged in popularity, gaining 1 million followers in a month. Kylie Perkins is a tough-love motivator who yells at you to clean your house. I choose not to follow her because I am a grown woman and a single mom, and I am doing the best I can and don’t need to be yelled at. But some people respond to that…who am I to judge? It’s just not for me.
Within a couple of days, some liberal TikTokers discovered that Kylie followed President Trump and launched a campaign to cancel her. Then, a counter-campaign was launched by Trump supporters to follow her.
I still refuse to follow her because I can’t take the yelling. I don’t care who she supports or doesn’t support. JUST DON’T YELL AT ME, OKAY?!
Why am I writing about Kylie Perkins when I don’t care for her videos? This whole scenario has got me thinking about all the snide comments I hear about the “MAGA cult.” But in my own personal observations, I have never noticed a mass unfollowing of a social media influencer because they voted for a Democrat.
Recently, a furniture store in my small, Maine Coast Town posted on Facebook that they were having a mattress sale for President’s Day. It’s the kind of sale every furniture store in America runs on President’s Day, no matter who’s in the White House.
I encourage anyone reading this to check out your local furniture store’s Facebook page and see if they’re holding a President’s Day sale. If they are, take a peek at the comments section—did it spiral into a 395-comment firestorm? That’s what happened here in my little Maine town. A simple mattress sale post turned into a battleground.
Personal note: I bought my mattress from this store two years ago, and it is amazing and comfortable. I love it. I highly recommend them.
Here is a sampling of some comments. Names have been left off for privacy.
Is this an emotionally healthy response? I keep circling back to that question after watching TikTok erupt over Kylie Perkins’ follow list and seeing a mattress sale in my quiet Maine town ignite a 395-comment war. We’re out here turning everyday choices—who you follow, what you sell on a holiday—into loyalty tests and moral crusades. Though, to be fair, I doubt all 395 of those commenters were people who were going to buy mattresses and abruptly decided not to because it was a President’s sale and they do not like President Trump.
The commenters were a bit unhinged. It’s exhausting to watch, let alone live through. Maybe I’m naive, but I can’t help thinking we’d all be better off saving our energy for something that actually matters. Am I saying there aren’t wild MAGA folks out there? Absolutely not. But before you slap the ‘cult’ label on Trump supporters, take a quick look around—you might spot some pitchforks in your crowd.
I could not agree more. Never have I seen such vitriol or people as unhinged as today. Such anger! I’m not sure it will subside, but I just refuse to react to it.
